The book of Galatians is a written defense of the Gospel of the grace of God. The Gospel had come under attack by a number of false teachers who had invaded the Galatian church. They emphasized the necessity of works for salvation and were trying to bring the Galatian believers back into the bondage of legalistic religion from which they had been freed by the Gospel.

The false teachers taught that it was only possible to attain spiritual maturity by means of the law. Paul implied that since they began the Christian life by faith they should continue toward maturity in the same way.

Whenever a child is born he has all that he needs for life; nothing needs to be added. All that is necessary for that child to grow to maturity is food, exercise, and cleansing.
