“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank…” (Daniel 1:8).

Daniel is man whose life and experience touches right where we are. He is a man who is trying to live a godly life in the midst of a pagan society.

Daniel was not a full-time prophet. He was called into secular employment – he was a government official. But God was able to use Daniel just as much as any full-time prophet because the power in Daniel’s ministry lay not in his calling but in his character.

(You may not be in full time ministry but God can use you as much as any pastor or missionary. The effectiveness of your ministry is not determined by your calling, but by your character).

Daniel was a man of Biblical convictions! He believed God’s Word and he obeyed it! He didn’t try to rationalize it or ignore it. He accepted God’s Word as the single authority by which to live no matter what the circumstances or consequences might be!

Daniel had convictions worth standing alone for. Do you have Biblical convictions that you would stand for regardless of the consequences? Because if you’ve nothing worth standing alone for you have nothing worth living for.

Parents, if you want to pass on to your children a purpose that’s worth living for then you need to start teaching them and passing on convictions that are worth standing alone for.

Our world is quickly changing. We don’t know what lies ahead for our children. It’s certainly not our responsibility to worry; but it is our responsibility to train them and teach them and prepare them to live a Godly life in an ungodly world.

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled” (Hebrews 12:15).

All of us have been hurt or offended by other people. Sometimes it’s intentional. Sometimes we are offended by others and they have no idea how much we have been hurt. What is critical is how you respond to that hurt.

Are you going to forgive or are you going to become bitter?

Bitterness begins with a wrong response to God’s grace. The moment you are hurt or offended – at that very moment – God gives you grace to respond to your offender with full forgiveness. When you resist that grace and willfully choose not to forgive, you become bitter.

The writer of Hebrews calls it a “root of bitterness.” This describes the depth of bitterness in a person’s life. The effects of bitterness go down deep into a person’s soul and unless it’s dealt with Biblically there will be devastating consequences.

No one else can take care of your bitterness for you. It’s yours! It will not go away over time. In fact it will become even worse.

If you are bitter, you are going to have to take full responsibility for your bitterness, accept God’s grace, and forgive your offender.

“And it came to pass after these things, that God…said unto him, Abraham: Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will

Notice the urgency in these verses. God’s command is “Now! Take NOW” – not tomorrow – but now!

Isn’t it amazing how we debate with God? We know a thing is right, but we find all kinds of excuses for not doing it immediately. God commanded Abraham to take his son and offer him as a burnt offering. Can you imagine how difficult that would be? Can you imagine the emotional pain and trauma involved?

But there’s no hesitation – there are no excuses – just calm, deliberate obedience.

How quick are you to respond to the promptings of the Holy Spirit? When the Lord prompts you to witness, do you respond immediately or do you make excuses? When the Lord exposes sin in your life, are you quick to deal with it or do you put it off till some more convenient day? When you have hurt or offended a loved one, are you quick to ask forgiveness or do you inwardly reason that “They’ll get over it”?

Someone has said, “Most Christians have the right aim in life, they just never get around to pulling the trigger.”

“Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise)…” (Ephesians 6:2)

The word honor means “to value; to highly esteem something.” Practically, to honor your parents means to speak well of them, to be respectful to them, and to look for ways to serve them.

This was written not just for the benefit of younger children, but for all of us.

That’s why it’s so important for any of you that are working in a position of leadership with young people – your goal is not to win the hearts of those young people so that they’ll listen to you and do what you tell them. Your goal is to turn the hearts of those young people toward their parents.

This was a major emphasis of the ministry of John the Baptist. The very last verse of the Old Testament tells us that an overlooked aspect of his ministry was “to turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers…” (Malachi 4:6).

Honoring your parents comes with an incredible promise – “That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:3).

As you read through the Bible you discover that it is full of precious promises. What we don’t often realize is that many of these promises are conditional (e.g. Psalm 37:4; Proverbs 3:5-6; Isaiah 26:3). When we fulfill the condition, we are then able to benefit from the blessing of the promise.

To do this, psychologists often look for generic cialis online find that pharmacy store patterns that will help them understand and predict behavior using scientific methods, principles, or procedures to test their ideas. And the same is true of this promise in Ephesians chapter six. Do you know someone and things don’t seem to be going well for them? Many times it can be traced back to a violation of this commandment to honor those that God has placed in authority over us.

Your parents may have made major mistakes. They may have failed in many ways. But that’s not your responsibility. Ever since the Garden of Eden, God has been working through imperfect parents to accomplish His purposes.

Your responsibility is to honor them – to speak well of them, to be respectful to them, and to look for ways to serve them. If you have failed to show honor to them in the past, then you need to humble yourself and ask their forgiveness.

Look for ways today to show honor to your parents.

“Do not err, my beloved brethren” (James 1:16).

Drawing a line on the white board, I marked one end of the line “HOT” and the other end “COLD.” I then asked the Christian teenagers in the class that I was teaching to place an “X” on that line where they thought would best describe their walk with the Lord at that present time. Each of the class members came to the front one after another and placed an “X” almost right in the center between “HOT” and “COLD.”

I proceeded to ask them if they would like to know what God thought about their response. They said that they would. So I turned to Revelation 3:15-16 and read to them: “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

It’s amazing how a little exercise like that can sober us into reality.

Scripture makes it very clear that God does not group all Christians together in one large bunch; but there are different categories of Christians in Scripture that the Lord is very careful to distinguish.

In Revelation chapter 3, there are hot Christians, there are cold Christians, and there are also lukewarm Christians. In 1 Corinthians chapter 3, there are spiritual Christians and there are carnal Christians. There are those who are spiritually mature and those who have never matured and are spiritual babes (1 Corinthians 3:1). There are those who are going the whole way with God and those who are going their own way (2 Timothy 4:10). There are those whose life’s work will amount to gold, silver and precious stones and others whose life will amount to wood, hay and stubble(1 Corinthians 3:12). There are Christians who are overcomers (Revelation 2:7) and there are those who are overcome by the world, the flesh and the devil. There are those who will be great in the Kingdom of heaven and those who will be the least (Matthew 5:19). There are those who will be greeted with the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23) and others who will be ashamed when they stand before Him at the Judgement Seat of Christ (1 John 2:28).

Every day, God is using the circumstances and trials of life to teach us more of the character of Christ (Romans 8:28-29). Don’t be passive. Actively embrace these opportunities to grow in your walk and in your relationship with the Lord.

Spiritual maturity is not measured by the length of time we have been a Christian, but by the direction we are heading.

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice” (Ephesians 4:31).

Anger is a sin that is rarely talked about and for that reason many Christians are angry people. If you are a person who is constantly losing your temper or having blowups in your home, your office or your church, there are three things the Bible says are true about you.

You’re giving Satan an opportunity to bring all kinds of destruction to your life and relationships – “…let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil” (Ephesians 4:26-27). Anger gives Satan a foothold or an advantage in our lives. That bitterness or anger doesn’t just affect us. It affects our relationships with others especially those we love the most.

You’re setting yourself up for trouble – “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls” (Proverbs 25:28). In Old Testament times a city without walls was in imminent danger of destruction. It was open invitation for trouble. Anger or bitterness is one of the leading causes of death through heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure. There are a host of physical and emotional consequences of anger; but there are also spiritual consequences. Because when you are angry…

You’re out of fellowship with God – “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?” (1 John 4:20).

When is the time to deal with anger? When is the time to mend that broken relationship? NOW! Don’t put it off. Seek help. Seek accountability – especially if your children become the object of your anger.

There is a fine line between discipline and abuse. Discipline is appropriate and Biblical, but if you discipline your children in anger then you have stepped across that line and need to seek immediate help.

Be willing to humble yourself and seek forgiveness from those that you have hurt or wounded with your anger.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).

According to a seventy-year study, divorce is comparable to two packs of cigarettes a day. The study found that those divorced had a 40% greater risk of “premature death” than those who were steadily married. Another recent study claims that divorce can actually increase your chances of terminal cancer! And divorced men were also found to be twice as likely to die of cardiovascular disease than their married counter-parts.

An interesting survey was taken of 3,500 couples whose marriages were in trouble: of those who chose to stay together despite the fact that they had rated their marriages as “very unhappy,” 86% rated those same marriages as “very happy” or “quite happy” five years later. Yet so many people today are willing to give up on their marriages without any effort to try and communicate and resolve their problems.

Communication is the only means for resolving conflicts in a marriage. Refusing to deal with the problems in your marriage or walking away from them will not make you happy. It only presents you with a new set of problems that are very much worse.

Don’t give up on that relationship. Be prepared to talk and communicate with your spouse. Be prepared to back down and humble yourself. Be prepared to forgive and to ask forgiveness when you are wrong.

“… there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure” (2 Corinthians 12:7).

Trials are a normal part of the Christian life. They shouldn’t take us by surprise. They come for at least four reasons.

Sometimes trials come because of our own sin. These are the trials that we bring upon ourselves. We struggle to make payments for houses and cars we can’t afford. We suffer physically because of drug or alcohol abuse. However, not all suffering is due to our own failures.

We sometimes suffer because of the sins of others. Many a wife and child have suffered because of the sins of an ungodly husband and father. Our sin not only affects us but also those that we love the most.

Thirdly, trials come because of who we are. One of the most fundamental reasons why Christians suffer is because of our commitment to Christ. Paul says, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12).

But trials also come from the hand of a loving God. There are certain trials I can look back on in my life and say with all sincerity, “Thank God for them!” Because God was using those trials to get me to take my eyes of temporal things and to focus them upon eternal realities.

Now whenever we are going through trials, we must recognize two facts about God.

God is Good. That’s easy to say when everything is going according to our plan, but what about when our world is falling in around us? God is still good. Our circumstance may change but God doesn’t change (Hebrews 13:8).

2. God is Sovereign. There’s not one thing that happens in your life or mine without the knowledge and permission of a Sovereign God Who has everything under control (Romans 8:28).

Whatever the cause or reason for the trial, our responsibility is to acknowledge the goodness and sovereignty of God, and to accept these new circumstances as the path that God has given us to walk for His glory.

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

“His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” (Matthew 25:21).

The Premier of a major commonwealth country said that when the Great War broke out, his government at once offered to do what they could to back Great Britain. They asked what was the most useful thing that they could do, and the reply came – “Build us ships: we need ships.” However, they didn’t build ships, but they began to till the fields, sow seed, and reap harvests in order to send food back to Britain. Grain was gathered and put into sacks, and brought down to the water’s edge to wait for the ships. But the ships never came.

When we get to eternity the question will not be “What have you done?” but “Have you been faithful?” Not “How busy were you?” but “How obedient were you?”

Many Christians say, “I teach Sunday school,” I’m so busy at church.” But it’s not a question of just being busy. Do you choose to do what you want with your life or do you allow God to make the choices for you?

There is a teaching that has become accepted in our churches today which simply states that as long as you go to church and are a good neighbor, you can make all the decisions in your life. You can choose your vocation, you can choose whoever you want to marry, and as long as you tithe, you can choose how to spend the remaining 90%. That kind of teaching is dangerous and is causing many Christians to miss God’s best for their lives.

The Lord has a very specific plan and purpose for each one of our lives – and for each of our children’s lives. And in order to fulfill His plan, we need to allow Him to make the choices.

Have you ever dedicated yourself totally to following the will of God? Have you ever told the Lord that you were available anytime, anywhere, at any cost, to do anything? That’s not necessarily a choice that will bring you ease and comfort, but it is a choice that will bring blessing and make your life count for eternity.

“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted” (Galatians 6:1).

Evangelism is sharing the Good News of the Gospel and leading someone to know and accept Christ as their Savior. It represents part of the fulfilling of the Great Commission that Jesus charged us with at the end of the Gospels (Mark 16:15).

We may not have the specific gift of evangelism but we must all share the responsibility to “…do the work of an evangelist” (2 Timothy 4:5).

The Lord may burden us to pray for the salvation of specific people groups or individuals. He will providentially bring people across our path that He expects us to share the Gospel with. As difficult as it may seem, it’s what we must do.

But there is something even more difficult for which we each have a shared responsibility – it’s trying to restore an erring Christian. That’s what many of the New Testament epistles are all about – rebuking, exhorting, encouraging Christians to believe the Truth and to walk in the Truth.

“Only by pride cometh contention…” (Proverbs 13:10).

Whenever there is conflict or tension in a relationship, know that there is also pride lurking in the background.

God hates pride. In fact, of the seven sins that God hates the most, Proverbs 6:17 puts pride at the very top of the list.

James 4:6 says that “…God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” Do you know what it means to “resist”? The actual Greek word means “to oppose; to battle against.”

Pride is unteachable, unapproachable, and uncorrectable. Pride refuses to see its own problems; and will focus instead on the faults and failings of others.

Almost always there is fault on both sides. They may be 95% to blame and you may only bear 5% of the responsibility. Don’t focus on their 95% – it will only make you bitter and cause you to have a totally wrong perspective on sin.

Focus only on the 5% that you can clearly take responsibility for and be willing to humble yourself and deal with pride. Be open and willing to take responsibility for other things that God and others may also point out to you.

“Neither give place to the devil” (Ephesians 4:27).

Bitterness or unforgiveness is the easiest inroad that Satan has to a Christian’s life. A quick perusal through the Scriptures shows a clear demonic link with the sin of unforgiveness.

Peter asked Jesus, “…Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?” (Matthew 18:21). Peter thought he was being generous. But Jesus called for unlimited forgiveness and then told the parable of the Unmerciful Servant who because of his unwillingness to forgive was delivered “…to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him” (Matthew 18:34). Normally Jesus never made application to His parables, but in this instance – as if to drive home a point – he said, “So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses” (Matthew 18:35).

In 1 Corinthians Paul wrote about a young man who was involved in immorality. Church discipline was exercised and he was literally delivered over to Satan (1 Corinthians 5:5). The goal of church discipline is not revenge or punishment but repentance; and in Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians the desired effect was produced and the young man returned to the church fellowship. There were, however, some in the church body who refused to forgive this young man and Paul writes, “…ye ought rather to forgive him…Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Corinthians 2:11).

In the immediate context of anger and bitterness, Paul says to the believers in the church at Ephesus, “Neither give place to the devil” (Ephesians 4:27). The word “place” is a translation of the Greek word TOPOS – it’s where we get our English word “topography” from. It literally means “ground.” Bitterness or anger gives Satan ground to operate in a believer’s life.

Most Christians would never think of becoming involved in the occult and giving opportunity for the enemy to operate; but bitterness is one of the easiest inroads which Satan has to a Christian’s life. Christians who have a bitter, unforgiving spirit have already opened themselves up to demonic attack.

As in any warfare, ground that has been gained by the enemy needs to be reclaimed if victory is to be realized. The only remedy is forgiveness and to ask God to take back the ground given to the enemy through the sin of unforgiveness.

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31-32).

“The integrity of the upright shall guide them…” (Proverbs 11:3).

Usually when we are asking questions about God’s will there are two primary concerns. We want to know what we should do and where we should go. We are chiefly concerned about our vocation and our location.

But when we ask these questions first, we miss the most important aspect of the will of God. Paul says, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification…” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). That’s not something we have to pray about! We are told exactly what God’s will is and it is the same for every Christian. God’s will is our sanctification.

Sanctification is the process by which we become less and less like ourselves and more and more like Jesus.

God’s will is not primarily a matter of our location or vocation – it’s a matter of the condition of our hearts. It’s not where we are or what we’re doing that is of primary concern to God; but it’s what we are that matters most to Him.

When we make Christ-likeness our chief concern, the other questions will find their answers by default. God will open up doors of opportunity and service. As long as we continue to develop the character of Jesus Christ we will continually have the guidance to stay on the right path and keep in the will of God.

The writer of Proverbs says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). The word “acknowledge” means “to know” Him. In every situation know and understand how Jesus would respond.

Ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?” How would Jesus respond to this person who just wronged and hurt you?

If you get angry and bitter toward someone rather than showing forgiveness, that’s when you miss God’s will. It’s when you rebel rather than being obedient that you miss God’s direction. It’s when you lie rather than being honest that you get off the right path.

Make the quest for character and Christ-likeness your chief concern. If you are continually developing and demonstrating the character of Jesus Christ, it will be impossible for you to miss the will of God for your life in these other areas.

“And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge”(2 Peter 1:5).

What use is a person’s theology if it doesn’t change his life? We can dot our I’s and cross our T’s. We can systematize our doctrine and know all of the latest evangelical buzz words – but if it’s not making us more like Christ then we are just playing church. The ultimate goal of Bible study is not that we might acquire more information but that our lives might be changed.

Knowledge alone does not make a person more spiritual. Knowledge puffs up and makes us proud. The application of truth is what changes lives. It’s the difference between being a hearer and a doer of the word. It’s what makes us men and women of character.

Intellectualism has become a pseudo spirituality. Don’t get me wrong – there is a place for learning. It’s just not the end goal. It’s not the standard for Godliness. True spirituality is marked by humility, meekness, integrity, gratefulness, forgiveness, and a host of other Christ-like qualities.

These are character qualities that need to be taught.

They’re certainly not taught in the public schools. They need to be taught in the home. And if you home educate your children, then you have a wonderful opportunity to invest in the character development of your sons and daughters.

“For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he… (Proverbs 23:7).

Some say that it doesn’t matter what you believe, just so long as you live right. I have a problem with that because what you believe determines how you live. If your belief system is wrong not only will it affect how you live your life but it will also have implications all the way into eternity.

If you believe that we are the product of evolutionary chance then issues like abortion and euthanasia will be of little or no concern. The ultimate conclusion of this belief system is that we are a sophisticated mammal slightly more advanced than our close relatives in the animal kingdom and have no more rights on planet earth than a fruit fly. Since there is no creator that we are responsible to and no moral absolutes to guide our behavior, everything is relative. It is therefore justifiable to steal, lie, cheat and kill as determined by our own individual set of circumstances. This is the thought process that directs our post modern culture.

If on the other hand you believe that we are created in the image of God and that we will one day stand before Him and have to give an account for every word, deed, thought, attitude and motive – that will make an incredible impact upon how you live your life. This is what the “fear of the Lord” is all about – the awareness that He is always watching and that everything we do and say and think is open before Him and will one day be judged by Him.

What we really believe in our hearts is reflected in our attitudes and in our behavior. Which begs the question, “Why then do we as Christians behave in a way inconsistent with the teaching of Scripture?” It’s because at that moment we have accepted and believed a lie.

Perhaps you need to make a “truth adjustment” as you begin your day. Reject the lies of the enemy and submit yourself to be governed – not by emotions or expedience – but by the authority and truth of God’s Word.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).

Behind every discouragement is a lie from Satan. In Ephesians 6:16, where Paul is dealing with the subject of Spiritual Warfare, he exhorts his readers to take up the shield of faith “wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked [one].”

If we are going to gain victory over discouragement, then we must first remove any guilt. Satan will often try to use past mistakes or failures to keep us from dealing with discouragement. He will convince us that our lives are of little value or worth because of failures in our past. And so we carry around heavy burdens of guilt that God never intended us to carry.

Guilt is not something to ponder and review. It should drive us to action!

If there is guilt in your life over some sin that has never been confessed and put right, then acknowledge it, confess it to God, make restitution if necessary, and do not give Satan an opportunity in your life to make a stronghold by which he can throw you into discouragement.

But beware of false guilt. This is where Satan reminds us of sin and failures from the past in an effort to convince us that we are not worthy of God’s love. If that sin has already been confessed then it is covered by the blood of Jesus Christ (1 John 1:7). We are told that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Obviously God does not forget. When He says, “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins” (Isaiah 43:25) – He is stating that He will never bring up against us past offenses that have been confessed and repented of. In fact we are told that “as far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).

As believers, those sins that we fail or refuse to deal with now and take with us to the grave, we will be confronted with at the Judgement Seat of Christ. While our eternal destiny is never in question, our present fellowship with the Lord and our future rewards and position in the Kingdom of Heaven will be greatly affected.

So take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

If the guilt you are experiencing is legitimate – then deal with it. Take ownership and responsibility of the sin and renew your fellowship with the Lord.

If it’s “false” guilt you are struggling with – then reject this lie from the enemy reminding him that “…the blood of Jesus Christ…cleanseth us from all sin (1 John 1:7).

On a side note – as God forgives us, that’s exactly how we are to forgive each other: “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32).

“But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel” (Philippians 1:12).

Paul saw God’s hand at work in every area of his life. He did not get upset and frustrated when so-called “bad” things happened. This was God’s perfect plan for Paul’s life. His steps had been ordered of the Lord and Paul rejoiced in every detail.

We live in a sin-cursed world. Being a Christian does not make us immune to troubles and trials. But this is where we have an advantage over the world. We have the knowledge and the assurance that “…all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). This “inside” information gives us a boldness and a confidence to press on.

God is at work – He is always at work. Paul shared how that his circumstances “…have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel.” Only God can do that. He can take a tragedy and He can turn it into a triumph. He can take a seeming defeat and He can turn it into a victory.

Many times we ask the question with our mind if not with our mouth – “Why did God let this happen?” That’s not an altogether inappropriate question to ask. Some suggest that we are not to ask, “Why?” – we should just accept our circumstances and move on. But if “…all things work together for good …according to His purpose” – shouldn’t we be the least bit curious as to what His purpose might be?

There may be many aspects of His purpose that we won’t understand until eternity. We will be astounded at the design and complexity of His sovereign plan. But there are certainly lessons that we can learn here and now.

That’s a work that will be completed in eternity; but it’s a work that God is actively involved in right now. He wants to make you more like Jesus.

What are the character qualities that God is working to build into your life through your present circumstances? Are those closest to you able to see the transformation take place as you respond to the trials and difficulties of life with the grace and meekness of Christ?

Don’t miss out on the character building lessons that God has for you to learn today – embrace them as a means of becoming more like Christ!

“By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion” (Psalm 137:1).

Not everything in life goes according to plan – according to our plan at least. There are circumstances we find ourselves in that we never dreamed possible.

Daniel, his three friends, and many others like them were cruelly taken from their home by the Babylonians (Daniel 1:1-4). They had done nothing to deserve this personally. These terrible circumstances were the direct result of sin and disobedience in the lives of their present and preceding kings in the nation of Israel.

As the king went so went the nation. When the king followed God’s ways and sought Him with his whole heart – these were times of revival and blessing. But when the king was given to idolatry and sin – the nation suffered. Now the Babylonian captivity was the ultimate consequence and judgment for their disobedience, and tragically there were many innocent people who loved God that were taken captive into Babylon.

What do you do when your adverse circumstances are the result of someone else’s wrong choices? How do you respond if you’re the victim of a DUI or a spouse that has been left for someone else?

Certainly there is time for grieving and reflection; but ultimately God is still in control. This is just a new path He has given you to walk and He has promised to walk it with you “…for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). Whatever your circumstances, He has promised to guide you and provide for you.

“O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged” (2 Corinthians 6:11).

Have you ever heard someone say, “We’re growing apart from each other”? What they are really saying is, “We don’t communicate anymore!” Not that they don’t talk, but they don’t communicate feelings and ideas anymore!

I had a wife come to me a number of years ago when we lived in England. This couple has been married for over 35 years. He commuted back and forward to his office in London every day. He left the house at 6:00 AM and returned at 8:00 PM each evening. They spent very little time with each other and this had created deep-rooted problems. She said to him, “We need to talk.” He said, “What do we need to talk about? There are no problems.” If you don’t communicate, those problems will never be resolved.

Someone has said that the vacuum created by a lack of communication is filled with rumors, gossip, speculation, accusations and half truths.

Communication is so important because it is the only means for solving problems in a marriage. Even if there are no problems in your marriage you still need to communicate because communication is the God-given means whereby two people can become one.

“And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men” (Acts 24:16).

Zacchaeus was a man who recognized the importance of a clear conscience. Once his life was right with God, he realized the urgency of making restitution and correcting past violations. He said, “…Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold” (Luke 19:8).

During a period of revival in Northern Ireland in the 1920’s, the ship yard in Belfast had to build an extra building just to store all of the stolen tools and materials that were being returned by repentant employees eager to make things right with God and man.

What do you need to do to obtain a clear conscience? You need to seek God’s forgiveness, yes! But linked with that, you need to seek the forgiveness of the one you’ve offended. If you’ve made promises to your family, or others and you’ve not fulfilled them, then you need to ask their forgiveness and see to it that the promise is fulfilled. If you have borrowed something from a friend or neighbor and haven’t returned it, then you need to take that item back and make it right.

If you have been dishonest in your business or finances, you need to make a list of those you have cheated and you need to make restitution. If you have harmed someone’s reputation through gossip or slander then you need to humble yourself and ask their forgiveness.

Satan will do everything he can to keep you from correcting past violations because he knows when a Christian gets that serious about his walk with God, he will start affecting the lives of people around him.

“Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law” (Psalm 94:12).

If you aren’t praying for your children, then who is? Given the pressures placed upon young people in our society today, your children need prayer! And if you aren’t praying daily for them, then it is very likely that they have no one else to plead for them before the throne of grace. But what should you be praying for your children?

Pray that they might understand the relationship between God’s reproofs and their violation of Biblical principles. The Psalmist said, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes” (Psalm 119:71).

Life is held together by a very intricate series of cause-and-effect relationships. You cannot obey God’s ways without being blessed; but you cannot ignore them or disobey them without there being consequences in your life and in your relationships with others.

The moment we are wronged or offended, God gives us grace to respond Biblically to our offender. The reason why God supplies grace and the reason why we resist it is because His principles are the very opposite of our natural inclinations (Isaiah 55:8). Jesus says, “…Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). Our natural inclination is to get even.

But whenever you resist or reject God’s grace and violate His principles there will be consequences and conflicts in your life and in your relationships with others. The writer of Hebrews warns, “Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled” (Hebrews 12:15).

For some extent, some discount levitra http://www.devensec.com/rules-regs/decregs105.html one do regular exercise can avoid strict diet.
Wisdom is being able to see that connection between our violation of Biblical principles and the consequences or reproofs that we are experiencing. Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

If our children can see that connection they will then have the knowledge to resolve conflicts and have successful relationships. So pray daily that they might see life from God’s perspective and that they might understand the relationship between God’s reproofs and their own violation of Biblical principles.

“For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son…” (Romans 8:29).

If someone was to ask you the question, “What is your purpose in life?” – how would you respond? Would you say that it’s your job? your ministry? your family? What happens if you loose your job? What happens if you loose your family? As important as these are, our purpose in life needs to be even greater.

Paul describes his life purpose in Philippians 3:10 – He says, “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.”

Moses was a man who witnessed the incredible power and miracles of God in Egypt. He saw God part the Red Sea. He saw God supply food and water for the nation of Israel in the midst of a barren desert for forty years. He saw all of these things, but he was never content. In Exodus 33:13, he said, “Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, show me now thy way, that I may know thee…”

The Bible describes David as a man after God’s own heart. In Psalm 27:4, he says, “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD…”

In His great high priestly prayer in John 17:3, Jesus prayed, “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
In Matthew 11:29 Jesus said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart…”

There are multitudes of people who are serving Jesus Christ who have never really taken the time to get to know Him; and you cannot get to know Jesus Christ intimately apart from understanding His character. He is the personification of meekness, forgiveness, obedience and a host of other Godly qualities.

It’s as we get to know Him that we learn how to respond correctly to others and to the trials and difficulties of life. It’s as we get to know Him that we find true purpose in life as we become transformed more and more into His likeness.

“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil” (Ephesians 4:26-27).

The word “place” in Ephesians 4:27 is a translation of the Greek word TOPOS. It’s where we get our English word “topography” from. It literally means “ground.” Strong’s Concordance defines it metaphorically as an “opportunity, power, occasion for acting.”

The immediate context of Ephesians 4:27 reveals one of the major ways a Christian can give “ground” to Satan – anger or bitterness. When husband and wife go to bed angry or bitter toward one another, they give “ground” to Satan.

In 2 Corinthians 2:11, Paul exhorts the Corinthian believers to forgive a repentant Christian brother who had been involved in immorality – “Lest,” says Paul, “Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.”

If you’re at odds with another person, if bitterness in your heart causes you to walk the other way when you see them coming, if all you can do is tear them down in your conversation with others – then Scripture makes it clear that you have given major “ground” in your life to the enemy and have given him an “opportunity, power, occasion for acting.”

In Matthew 18, Peter asks the Lord how many times he should be willing to forgive someone who repeatedly offended him. Jesus answered Peter by calling for unlimited forgiveness. The Lord then goes on to tell a story to illustrate the devastating consequences of an unforgiving spirit.

He tells of a servant who owed his master an incredible amount of money. But he made an appeal and the master forgive him and released him from his debt. A second servant owed the first servant a few pennies in comparison, but the first servant – who had been forgiven so much – refused to forgive his fellowservant. When his master heard about this unmerciful servant, Matthew 18:34 says, “And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.” Now normally Jesus never made application to His parables; but in this instance He wanted to make sure we understand the importance of this truth. He says in verse 35, “So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.”

There is a clear Biblical connection between anger or bitterness and demonic powers. Bitterness is the most common and overlooked access that Satan has to infect a believer’s life. The antidote is forgiveness.

“The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him” (Proverbs 20:7).

The sins of the fathers are passed down to the children to the third and fourth generation (Numbers 14:18). But thank God, the opposite is also true.

The blessings of a Godly life are also passed down through the generations. When we as parents are willing to die to self, deal with sin, and develop the character of Christ – we pass on to our children a Godly heritage.

A number of years ago I attended a conference where the life and legacy of Jonathan Edwards was being addressed. By the year 1900, his descendants included 300 clergymen (pastors, missionaries and theologians), 100 attorneys, 60 judges (one dean of a law school), 60 doctors (one dean of a medical school), 60 authors of fine classics, 100 professors and 14 presidents of universities, 3 mayors of large cities, 3 state governors, a controller of the US Treasury and a Vice-President of the United States.

It was said that Jonathan Edwards not only prayed for the salvation of his children and grandchildren but for the unborn future generations of his family.

I remarked of this to some new friends we were having dinner with. The husband said, “You don’t know, do you? My wife’s maiden name is Edwards. She’s a direct descendant of Jonathan Edwards.” They themselves were missionaries and they went on to share of other present day members of the Edwards family that were making an impact upon their generation for Jesus Christ.

“The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation” (Numbers 14:18).

As parents, you are the spiritual “umbrella-of-protection” over your children. If there are areas of weakness and sin in your moral life, you will open a leak in your protection through which Satan can bring destructive temptations to your family. If you are constantly being overcome by some area of temptation, your children will be especially susceptible to temptation in that same area.

Abraham lied about his wife, saying that she was his sister (Genesis 20:2). Abraham’s son, Isaac committed the exact same sin (Genesis 26:7). In Genesis chapter 27, Jacob lied and pretended to be Isaac’s eldest son Esau and so began generations of bitterness between the descendants of the two brothers.

An old adage states, “What parents allow in moderation, their children will excuse in excess.”

David was a man after God’s own heart, but he allowed a leak to develop in his “umbrella-of-protection” with devastating effects upon his family. David committed adultery, obviously thinking that it would never be discovered.
