God delights for us to worship Him. But there is more to worship than simply attending a church service. True worship involves at least two – often neglected – characteristics.
First, it involves Obedience.
“And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams” (1 Samuel 15:22).
You don’t worship God primarily by singing hymns or choruses but by living a life of consecrated obedience. You don’t worship God primarily by giving to the church of your time and money but by obeying every single word of God. We can never truly worship God aside from obedience to His Word. All our sacrifices of time and money are meaningless unless they flow from a heart of consecrated obedience. The Pharisees gave the appearance of spirituality (Matthew 6:1-5) yet Jesus said that they worshiped God with their mouths but their hearts were far from Him (Matthew 15:8).
Secondly, true worship involves a Clear Conscience.
“Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift” (Matthew 5:23-24).

What would it be like if before the worship service began each Sunday morning, an announcement was made that we were to first ask forgiveness of those that we have wronged throughout the week and then return for corporate worship? That’s essentially what Jesus is saying. In fact, that’s one of the major purposes of communion – self examination (1 Corinthians 11:27-30).
A clear conscience is vital for true worship to take place. If we come to God’s house with bitterness against another person or unconfessed sin in our heart; we may go through the motions but don’t call it worship. The Psalmist said, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me” (Psalm 66:18).
God delights when we worship Him; but let’s make sure our worship is genuine by preparing our hearts in His Word today.
