The writer of the book of Hebrews includes a little phrase in the twelfth chapter which expresses the entire secret of the Christian life. Hebrews 12:2 says, “Looking Unto Jesus…”
The word “looking” is a translation of an untranslatable Greek word. It means to fix our gaze upon Him, and to turn it away from everything else. We are to look unto Jesus and at nothing else – certainly not at ourselves.
There is nothing in ourselves that even merits God’s love and yet He loves us. We have sinned and rebelled against God and yet the Bible says that, “…God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
Jesus died in our place. He took the punishment we deserve. That’s the message of the Gospel. We owed a debt we couldn’t pay. He paid a debt He didn’t owe.
When we get to heaven, there is nothing that we will be able to boast about in ourselves. We won’t be able to say, I’m here today because of what a good person I was, or because I attended a certain church, or because I was baptized. Our only boast in heaven will be, I am here today because God loved me and He sent His Son to die for me.

That’s what salvation is all about – trusting in Jesus Christ and Him alone for salvation. Is that what you are trusting in? Has there ever been a time in your life when you have recognized that you are a sinner – unworthy of God’s love and unworthy of heaven? – and yet by faith you can today accept the free gift of salvation offered to you because of what Jesus Christ has done.
“Looking unto Jesus…” and not at ourselves.
